Brief Description | This module provides a foundation that will teach students the capabilities necessary to engage in philosophical and ethical arguing. In addition, students will apply these capabilities to contemporary ethical and political concerns. |
Indicative Syllabus | This broad-based module will introduce students to the skills and ideas which form the basis of philosophical and ethical enquiry. In addition to developing a basic philosophical and ethical vocabulary, they will be introduced to the concepts of logic and argumentation, as well as some introductory epistemology and phenomenology. In addition, students will encounter and engage with key ethical and political debates — including, the beauty industry, animal rights, biopolitics, postmodernism, and pornography. A range of perspectives on these topics will be used, including deontological, consequentialist, and non-theory based ethics. |
Learning Outcomes | A student passing this module should be able to: 1. Demonstrate a basic knowledge of key philosophical and ethical theories. 2. Analyse, identify, and communicate basic philosophical and ethical concepts and determine their basic strengths and weaknesses. 3. Construct critical arguments, formally and informally, that are supported by evidence and defend their own interpretation of the strengths and weaknesses of philosophical and ethical theories and concepts. Possesses a range of ICT skills in order to gather, evaluate and synthesise different types of information. |
