Brief Description

The module will offer a survey of the development of the short story genre up to the present, as well as raising a series of interconnected topics and themes around ideas of genre, American and British literary culture, literary theory, and literary technique.

Indicative Syllabus

Stories by many writers such as Poe, Hawthorne, Twain, James, Chopin, Kipling, Gilman, Conrad, Joyce, Fitzgerald, Hemingway, Mansfield, Lawrence, Cather, Nabokov, Carver, Munro.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

1.demonstrate an understanding of the nature and development of the short story genre;

2.demonstrate a capacity for developing independent, responsive and analytical readings of stories;

3.demonstrate an awareness of issues of literary technique and of the diversity of uses made of the short story form;

4.relate stories to their cultural context;

5.analyse the stories in comparative ways to explore larger theoretical and thematic issues;

6.relate the stories in reflective ways to issues of gender and society.
