Brief Description | The module will offer a survey of the development of the short story genre up to the present, as well as raising a series of interconnected topics and themes around ideas of genre, American and British literary culture, literary theory, and literary technique. |
Indicative Syllabus | Stories by many writers such as Poe, Hawthorne, Twain, James, Chopin, Kipling, Gilman, Conrad, Joyce, Fitzgerald, Hemingway, Mansfield, Lawrence, Cather, Nabokov, Carver, Munro. |
Learning Outcomes | A student passing this module should be able to: 1.demonstrate an understanding of the nature and development of the short story genre; 2.demonstrate a capacity for developing independent, responsive and analytical readings of stories; 3.demonstrate an awareness of issues of literary technique and of the diversity of uses made of the short story form; 4.relate stories to their cultural context; 5.analyse the stories in comparative ways to explore larger theoretical and thematic issues; 6.relate the stories in reflective ways to issues of gender and society. |
