Brief Description

This module aims to enable the student to understand the relationship between reading and writing. Through a series of prose fiction or play text case-studies, the student will analyse, discuss and draw parallels between the act of reading texts and the art of writing.

Indicative Syllabus

This module will run as weekly one hour lecture and alternating two hour workshops. Each week the student will follow a programme based on reading key texts. This will be discussed and analysed in view of a specific area of writing. In a series of in-class exercises the student will then practice or challenge the techniques located in the textual examples. Topics/themes will be chosen from among: Contemporary Realism, Stylising Dialogue, Experimental forms, voice and character, finding the narrative thrust, modern themes and traditional conventions, issue based writing.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to

1.demonstrate a broad knowledge of the relationship between creative writing and reading

2. read texts critically to examine modes of representation within writing

3. grasp an understanding of how to construct their own writing from the study of texts

4. grasp the practical demands and disciplines of writing

5. reflect on their work and the work of other writers with a critical awareness

6. work collaboratively and constructively in developing work
