Brief Description

This module aims to introduce students to university-level study skills and approaches and is compulsory for all students in the School of Humanities.  Students will be encouraged to read with critical awareness, write clearly and concisely, think creatively and constructively about personal, academic and career goals, and to plan an effective strategy towards achieving those aims. From Induction, and in anticipation of continued engagement in Semester 3, this module sustains the conversation about employability.

Indicative Syllabus

Following an introduction to the module, in the first semester, students will focus on developing the skills of reading, listening, note-taking and writing for academic purposes.  Key lectures and supporting seminar sessions in subject areas will provide information and guidance about locating and assessing resources, drafting and editing a variety of pieces of expository writing and appropriate referencing.  In the second semester, lectures on Career development, in line with Degreeplus, will be supported by groupwork and tutorials, leading to on-line reflection on work experience and employability skills in the third semester.
