Brief Description

This module aims to introduce students to a range of themes and ideas that concern all of the disciplines coming under the broad heading of ‘the Humanities’. A selection of key concepts will be discussed from a range of perspectives, providing coverage of seminal texts and periods from the Greeks to the contemporary world, and encouraging cross-fertilisation between topics, without decreasing specificity.

Indicative Syllabus

This module will run as weekly lectures, followed by two-hour subject-specific seminars. Each broad topic/theme will be dealt with in a four week (or three- week) block and the lectures will provide a mapping of the theme in relation to a range of disciplines from within the School of Humanities.  The seminars will focus on subject-related readings and discussion.  Topics/themes will be largely chronological and will be chosen from among:  The Ancient World, The Medieval Mind, The Renaissance, The Enlightenment, The Birth of Modernity and The Digital Human. Students will also be provided with guidance about finding, assessing and appropriate use of available resources.
