Brief Description

A theoretical and analytic approach to health issues concerning adults and their possible impact upon their life experiences.

Indicative Syllabus

This module will cover the following topics:

  • impact on the health and wellbeing of early life experiences, life stages, gender, culture, education and occupation;
  • the impact of inequalities in health social class and , media impact of health and ill health on family dynamics and life-events;
  • the role of conventional medicine and of alternative therapies;
  • cultural and historical constructs of health;
  • the effect of work and work place on health.
Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Critically analyse the impact of early life experiences on the biological, environmental and psychological issues in adults;
  2. Critically evaluate the major health issues of the 21st Century;
  3. Critically analyse the theories and concepts of health and wellbeing
  4. Evaluate basic data relating to health issues;
  5. Critically analyse health issues and appropriate sources of support.
