Brief Description

This module provides an opportunity for students to undertake a review of literature in a subject of their choice within their chosen field of study and thereby develop skills in information searching for primary research and critical appraisal.

Indicative Syllabus

This module will cover the following topics:

  • information searching using databases;
  • review of referencing skills and engagement with EndNote Web
  • primary and secondary research;
  • writing literature reviews;
  • paradigms, approaches and methodology;
  • how to do research;
  • population, sampling and statistics;
  • data gathering and analysis;
  • ethics;
  • searching for and critiquing other people’s research;
  • what research looks like.
Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Reflect upon the importance of research;
  2. Critically discuss ethical considerations of research;
  3. Evaluate the contribution of a range of research approaches, methodologies and methods;
  4. Plan conduct and disseminate a small piece of research in the context of the teaching environment;
  5. Critically evaluate research papers;
  6. Undertake a search for primary research using electronic data bases and other sources and show a high level of referencing skills.
