Brief Description

This module builds on the content of previous modules. Such themes as human psychology, socialisation, physiology legal and policy contexts are drawn together and applied to the crucial work of meeting service user need.

Indicative Syllabus This module will cover the following topics: methods of discerning and meeting need using concepts and ideas drawn from socialisation and psychology; systems theory and 'person-in-context'; the importance of the social model of disability and its implications for analysis and practice; methods of undertaking a person centred outcome led assessment from a range of tools/frameworks and professional perspectives; the role of advocacy in meeting needs; an overview of the methods of assessment care/ case planning and the legal and policy context of each, including issues of capacity; communication models and their role in care/ case planning; how to recognise and respond to abuse in its varied forms.
Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Understand the theories and principles that underpin person centred planning; Use theories related to the concept of human need and the social model of disability to implement the planning process and to evaluate the quality of practice;
  2. Understand that a range or methods are available to promote independence including the use of community, group, individual and technology;
  3. Identify the signs and symptoms of abuse and harm and know the procedures for responding to these for children and adults; 5. Communicate orally with others about the planning, service delivery and monitoring processes within the context of partnership working;
