Brief Description

This module aims to consolidate the ability of students to work as reflective practitioners able to learn from workplace experience. It requires students to demonstrate basic skills in relation to service users and work colleagues in practice settings and to understand the nature of the workplace. It also requires them to finalise the NLA by negotiating it with employers as well as the tutor and to track their progress against it whilst in the work setting. Whilst with the tutor this workplace progress will be used to inform progress in relation to the PDP and to plan for future modules within and without the workplace. Students may be employed on a paid or voluntary basis, or may be on a placement and should receive workplace mentoring or supervision.

Indicative Syllabus

The module will cover the following topics:

  • how to use the Negotiated Learning Agreement (NLA) to establish goals for learning in the workplace;
  • further exploration of the interpersonal and communication skills needed for working with particular kinds of service users;
  • discussion of the skills and knowledge for working with particular kinds of service users;
  • explanation of the basic skills and knowledge needed for working with colleagues and teams in different settings;
  • methods of assessing and recording the development or needs or well-being of a client or service user;
  • continued professionalism in relation to basic ethics and values, data protection, safeguarding and health and safety;
  • the role and value of mentoring or supervision on personal and professional development;
  • impact analysis - evaluating how learning achieved during the academic year has impacted on own workplace practice;
  • reviewing progress against the PDP.
Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Interact in a positive and competent way with service user(s) and work colleague;
  2. Understand work place policies and the internal and external environment of a workplace;
  3. Demonstrate commitment to the ethical, information handling, safeguarding, time management and health and safety requirements of the workplace setting;
  4. Implement and evaluate aspects of the action plan concerning PDP agreed through HH4001 through the process of gaining feedback, reflection and monitoring progress against the NLA;
  5. Reflect on learning from current practice and apply academic knowledge gained through the course to practice in the workplace.
