Brief Description

This module is designed to introduce the concept of personal development planning and to enable students to establish their personal development plan (PDP). Careers input will be an aspect of this module and students will be required to conduct a CV. This includes the development of those study and transferable skills required of students; an understanding of personal strengths and areas for development; reflection on, and planning for, personal, academic and career goals.

Indicative Syllabus

This module will cover the following topics:

  • personal skills assessment;
  • personal development planning;
  • academic  writing skills;
  • referencing and plagiarism;
  • presentation skills;
  • using library resources;
  • time and stress management;
  • group work;
  • goal setting;
  • learning and memory.
Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an awareness of the fundamental relationship between study skills and personal transferable skills;
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of being a reflective learner in order to identify personal learning strengths and weaknesses;
  3. Show an appreciation of the relationship between lifelong skill development and employability;
  4. Demonstrate skills involved in academic study, self-reflection and personal development planning;
  5. Set personal goals within the context of a personal development plan, and evaluate progress towards their achievement;
  6. Demonstrate improved capabilities in a number of study and transferable skills (including written work, presentation skills, group work) which enable them to become more effective, independent and self-motivated learners.
