Brief Description

A conceptual, theoretical and practical approach to physical and mental health issues relating to men, women, children, teenagers and older people that are likely to impact upon social care workers

Indicative Syllabus

The module will cover a range of topics that take a broad approach to the concept of health as it applies to all stages of the lifespan, from birth to older age. It will include physical and mental health issues through the lifespan including male and female fertility, cancers and illnesses.  The impact of stress on health, basic epidemiology, equalities and inequalities in health, impacts of social class on health, impacts of health and ill health on family dynamics and life-events will be discussed. The role of conventional medicine and of alternative therapies, cultural and historical constructs of health will be examined, along with concepts of wellbeing, healthy lifestyles, and health psychology. The module will also cover appropriate responses to identified health issues by social care workers.

Learning Outcomes

i  Knowledge and Understanding:
Oncompletion of the module students should be able to:
a) Critically analyse the impact of biological and psychological processes on lifespan development.
b) Critically evaluate the major health issues arising  at each life-stage and for males and females.
c) Critically analyse the theories of health and wellbeing and basic concepts in epidemiology.



ii  Skills: 
a)Analyse basic data relating to health issues
b)Identify health issues and appropriate sources of support.

Learning and Teaching Activities

Staff student contact circa 20% (to include: taught sessions, group work and discussion)
Student independent study circa 80% (to include: reading, research, group work and portfolio preparation)
