Brief Description This module involves students undertaking work experience in a health care, social care or community setting, which will advance their skills in practice and enhance their employability. Students will work with the Module Tutors to identify suitable placement opportunities.
Indicative Syllabus Audit of workplace and transferable skills; identification of skill development needs and opportunities; writing “SMART” goals to plan and clarify learning opportunities; writing applications to potential work placement providers/employers; arrangement of work placement; reflection on practice; frameworks for relating workplace practice to theory, policy, law and occupational standards; workplace experience in the context of career development and personal development planning; generation of evidence of experience and learning; reflective writing; production of portfolio; management of the self and emotions in the workplace; promotion of empowerment and social justice; the importance of communication, collaboration and teamwork; professionalism, values and anti-discriminatory practice.
Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and understanding
On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:
a)       Use the results of a skills audit to identify skill development needs, and construct appropriate “SMART” goals;
b)       Critically reflect on their experience and their progress in relation to the goals identified;
c)       Critically evaluate workplace practice in relation to theory and/or policy and law and/or occupational standards for competence and                   practice;
d)       Reflect on their experience and learning in the context of their personal development and career progression;
e)       Demonstrate a mature understanding of professional values, anti-discriminatory practice and personal responsibility in the workplace.



ii. Skills
On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:
a)       Use tools to analyse their own developmental strengths and needs
b)       Construct “SMART” goals
c)       Write strong, skill-based applications for paid or voluntary work
d)       Generate and gather evidence of experience and learning Produce a coherent portfolio

Learning and Teaching Activities

Total study time: 150 hours
Staff/student contact: 20% (lectures/workshops/tutorials/WebCT/workplace visit)
Student directed learning: 80% (including a minimum of 30 hours workplace experience)
