Brief Description The module develops student skills as a social educator, be it within community settings in a particular locality, a youth and/or community setting, a leaving care project, or an educationally based service for people with learning or physical disabilities or mental health problems. It is also appropriate to trainers. It considers the process of adult education and assessment, especially in relation to work competence, social and transferable skills and citizenship and will consider issues such as sexual health, drug usage, or community action in relation to local political decisions.
Indicative Syllabus Theories of adult learning; The pedagogy of the oppressed and education as a process of empowerment for individuals and communities; Methods of social education; Group work
Learning Outcomes i. Knowledge and Understanding

On successful completion of the module the students should be able to:
a) Critically evaluate the theories surrounding education of social skills, gentle teaching, transferable and key skills;
b) Critically evaluate key theories of adult education and assessment, including their application in the area of disability;
c) Critically analyse group dynamics and conflict management;
d) Critically examine the impact of SENDA 2001;
d) Critically evaluate the role of education as a form of emancipation or liberation.



ii. Skills

On successful completion of the module the students should be able to:
a) Adapt the educative process to the needs of particular social groups, in particular through the use of gentle teaching and group work;
b) Transfer and apply diagnostic and creative skills in the planning, delivery, monitoring and evaluation a programme of education to either a service user, a group of service users, colleagues or peers.

Learning and Teaching Activities Staff student contact circa 20% (to include lectures, discussion, small group work)
Student independent study circa 80% (to include micro teaching, assignment preparation)
