Brief Description This module explores the concept of addiction from a range of perspectives that focus on individual, groups and social processes. It considers addiction within the context of the global economy, and at local, familial and individual levels. It also considers, cultural, penal and professional responses to it.
Indicative Syllabus Theories and explanations concerning the aetiology and social construction of addictive behaviour. Similarities and differences between the different forms of addiction including substance abuse, violence, sexuality, food, computers. The relationship between addiction and social control. Addiction as a force within the global economy
Learning Outcomes i. Knowledge and Understanding

By the end of the module, students should be able to demonstrate:
a) Critically evaluate the range of theoretical perspectives that offer explanations about addiction;
b) Critically review the interface between social control and addictions within different cultural groups;
c) Critically analyse the range of addictive behaviour including, substance abuse; sexual, work, food, computers and other addictions;
d) Critically evaluate the implications of addictive behaviour on relationships;
e) Critically evaluate a range of ways of managing addictions and methods of intervention at the level of the individual both medical and social;
f) Critically review the global economic context of addiction.



ii. Skills

There will be an emphasis on the development of skills in:
a) Assess the implications of the prevailing social order and for its relationship to individual behaviour.

Student independent study circa 80% (to include assignment preparation, reading)
