Brief Description

The module focuses on the development of children and young people (0 - 18 years of age). It aims to develop knowledge of developmental issues, abuse, provision and relevant legislation. The module introduces students to the Every Child Matters (ECM): Change for Children programme.

Indicative Syllabus

The module introduces students to the scope and key issues in Every Child Matters (ECM) Change for Children programme enabling them to understand more fully the five outcomes of ECM, Common Assessment Framework (CAF), The Lead Professional and Multi-Agency working. Students will consider stages of development giving consideration to key transitions. Focus is also given to ideas around attachment, abuse, legislation and the Common Core of Skills and Knowledge required to work with Children and Young People.

Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and Understanding
On successful completion of the module the students should be able to:
a) Analyse the physical, cognitive, emotional and social aspects of children's and young people's development;
b) Critically evaluate the implications of Every Child Matters for the workforce including key processes such as CAF.
c) Evaluate the factors that contribute to the care and control of children and young people including working with parents, nutrition, health and safety, legal and other requirements;
d) Analyse the consequences of abuse for the family and on children and young people’s well-being;
e) Analyse the impact of a complex, diverse society and how issues of oppression, exclusion and discrimination affect child development;



ii. Skills
On successful completion of the module the students should be able to:
a) Recognise signs of abuse
b) Be able to use a CAF
c) Use group work skills to identify problems and their solutions.

Learning and Teaching Activities

Staff/Student contact circa 20% (to include: lectures, discussion, small group work)
Student independent study circa 80% (to include: assignment preparation)
