Brief Description

This module is intended to familiarise students with the major aspects of the research processes in health, community and social care. Emphasis is given to the development of skills in information searching for primary research, critical appraisal, group work and presentation. The module will develop understanding of the research process and will enable students to deepen their knowledge in an area of interest. Joint students need to take a research module that is appropriate to their fields of study.

Indicative Syllabus

This module will cover the following topics:

  • Basic principles of social research including the research process, the ethical approval processes, methodology, research methods, data analysis and methods of dissemination;
  • The process of searching for primary research;
  • Critical appraisal skills for evaluating published research relevant to practice;
Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and Understanding
On successful completion of the module the students should be able to:
a) Reflect upon the importance of research for policy and/or practice;
b) Critically discuss ethical considerations of research;
c) Evaluate the contribution of a range of approaches and methods to research;
d) Plan conduct and disseminate a small piece of research in the context of the teaching environment;
e) Critically evaluate research reports relevant to policy and/or practice;



ii. Skills
On successful completion of the module the students should be able to:
a) Undertake a search for primary research using data bases and other sources;
b) Organise and assimilate of knowledge into a coherent report;
c) Apply a critical approach to research;
d Plan, gather, analyse and present research findings;
e) Reflect on learning.

Learning and Teaching Activities

Staff student contact circa 20% (to include: lectures, seminars, tutorials, moodle, group work)
Student independent study circa 80% (to include Moodle, group work and assignment preparation)

Assessment (For further details see the Module Guide) 001: 90% Coursework: Portfolio: 3000 words or equivalent
002: 10% Coursework: Standard: 500 words or equivalent
