Brief Description

The module enables learners to explore the concept of Emotional Intelligence and how it relates to personal development and the work place.

Indicative Syllabus

This module is concerned with developing awareness of interpersonal skills enabling those intending to pursue a career in the health and social care fields to enhance their effectiveness as practitioners.  It is designed to encourage the adoption of a reflective approach to understanding oneself and others.   The module gives particular consideration to emotional intelligence as a developing field contributing to skills and competence within the health and social care workforce.

Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and Understanding
By the end of the module, students should:
a)  understand the importance of identifying strengths and weaknesses in personal and professional life,
b) evaluate methods and tools to develop personal understanding and self awareness and professional competencies,
c)  develop a critical understanding of the contribution of counselling approaches to growth and development,
d)  examine the concept and theoretical understanding of emotions



ii. Skills
By the end of the module, students should be able to demonstrate:
a) building rapport with self and others,
b) development of verbal and non-verbal communication skills
c) developing sensory awareness,
d) reflecting on personal experiences
e) develop empathic skills
f) improve self awareness

Student private study: 80%
