Brief Description This module will enable students to understand the legal and policy context of health, community and social care practice and will include an overview of legal structures and legal process. There will be input on legal and policy aspects of housing, employment, benefits, health, social care and criminal justice.
Indicative Syllabus

The module will begin with an overview of the relationship between law and social policy and the sources and process for legislative change. There will be an overview of the difference between civil and criminal law. The module will overview the key features and purpose of particular pieces of legislation and existing social policy initiatives across housing, employment, benefits, health, social care and criminal justice. It will move on to look at future or proposed initiatives in these areas, in the light of social change and demographic trends. Discussions will focus on some current social problems, with particular reference to needs, rights, responsibilities, social injustice, citizenship, equality and cultural issues.

Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and Understanding
On successful completion of the module the students should be able to:
a) Analyse the nature, origins and context of legislation; and social policy within the welfare state.
b) Evaluate existing legal and social policy perspectives across housing, employment, social security, health, social care and criminal justice.
c) Analyse the relationship of core values, social justice, cultural issues and equal opportunities issues in relation to current and future legislation and social policy.



ii. Skills
On successful completion of the module the students should be able to:
a) Use a range of tools to secure current information;
b) Communicate in writing with precision, using relevant legal vocabulary and accurate reference to legislation.
c) Develop skills in discussing and working in groups
d) Develop their presentation skills
