Brief Description

The role of a designer continues to evolve and change.  This module aims to introduce students to a range of project briefs such as the D&AD student awards scheme, YCN competitions, Penguin Books student awards and the Society of Typographic Designers awards and others.  Students may opt to work independently or form small groups in order to undertake the briefs.

Indicative Syllabus

The content of the module encompasses a variety of external competitions. A selection of design projects will be presented to the students. Professional and inspirational briefs, will provide students with the opportunity of gaining national and international recognition, within their chosen specialist fields. Students will be required to research, develop and produce work of a professional creative standard.  All students will need to concentrate on working to tight deadlines, produce highly creative and innovative design solutions, and develop time management skills.  All students will be required to take part in a series of group and individual critiques designed to develop their ideas and decision making.  By the end of the module, students will be required to deliver a presentation of research, creative development and industry standard visuals. Students will be expected to present a set of finished designs for all their chosen competition submissions.

Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and Understanding
By the end of the module students should be able to demonstrate that they:
a) are able to produce industry standard design solutions
b) recognise the need to manage the progress of their work to meet specific deadlines
c) are able to develop the strategies to respond to external professional design briefs



ii. Skills
By the end of the module, students should have developed skills in:
a) time management and professional attitude
b) working as part of a team
c) visualization and presentation techniques
