Brief Description

Building on the foundations of typography explored in Typography ideas at level one. This module aims to deliver a more in-depth analysis of how typography is utilised in the context of bodies of information. Students will explore the relationship between the written word and the use of typography in order to understand the use of language and the communication of messages.

Indicative Syllabus

The module aims to analyse and explore the principles of typography.  Students will be required to research, collect and present a wide range of existing typographic material for evaluation throughout the module. This module will commence with an introduction exploring the principles of typography and will examine the relationship between the text and the designer.  It will also explore the management of complex information in a typographic context.  Students are encouraged to challenge typographic conventions.

Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and Understanding
By the end of the module students should be able to demonstrate that they:
a) can analyse the creative potential of the aesthetics of typography
b) recognise the relationship between technology and typography
c) appreciate the potential of typography to communicate complex information



ii. Skills
By the end of the module, students should have developed skills in:
a) the use of typographic expression to communicate ideas and information
b) composition, structure, order and legibility
c) the aesthetics of typographic detail
