Brief Description This module requires the student to undertake a period of work experience, which is organised by the student in liaison with the Module Tutor. The student develops a 'learning contract' with the Module Tutor, which clarifies the professional skills and knowledge which the student will be seeking to develop through the work experience, and which specifies the learning support required and the timescale for completion. The nature and length of the work experience will be different for every student; it may include work over short or long periods, full or part-time. The assessment of work-based learning may be carried out using a variety of methods. These may include portfolios, reflective reviews of learning, and work-based projects, reports etc. The method chosen will be appropriate to the work situation and the requirements of the student. Tutorial support is provided. Work experience may begin in either semester of study.
Indicative Syllabus This module requires the student to organise the work experience in liaison with the Module Tutor. The student and tutor will draw up a learning contract which clarifies the aims and objectives of the work experience, in particular referring to the specific skills and knowledge which are to be acquired and explored during the work experience, and subsequently. The appropriate type of work experience should be chosen, to reflect the needs of the student, the required learning outcomes, and the likely vocational pathways which would be appropriate to the student following completion of studies. The types of work experience which would be appropriate will therefore be very broad, including short-term (a few weeks), long-term (several months), full-time, part-time, focused on very specific skills associated with the student's area of study, or on important transferable skills which may arise from disparate job experiences. The learning contract will enable the student to focus on very specific skills and knowledge which will be the focus of the student's attention during the work experience. The student will receive guidance on how to reflect on experiences and evaluate the outcomes of the work experience, through tutorials and a study pack. The organisation which hosts the student will be asked to prepare a statement on the student's performance. Consideration of these comments will be made by the Module Tutor in assessing the outcome of the student's experience.
Learning Outcomes

e)  the key areas of skills and knowledge which should be represented on a CV in order to be able to apply and succeed in getting future employment;

ii. Skills
On successful completion of the module the student should be able to demonstrate that they have:
a)  acquired a set of defined transferable skills;
b)  specific skills concerning the geography area;
c)  the ability to appraise existing skills, and to develop an action plan aimed at enhancing strengths and addressing weaknesses.

Learning and Teaching Activities

Staff/student contact: 4% (6 hrs; tutorials)
Student directed learning: 96% (144 hrs)

Note: It is expected that during any period of work experience, some of the time worked may not be directly or indirectly relevant to the development of professional skills at graduate level in the workplace. Hence an individual's learning contract may specify a minimum period of work experience which is longer than 160 hours, dependent upon the nature of the work being done. This ensures that appropriate graduate skills have had adequate time to be sufficiently addressed.
