Brief Description Subject Electives enable direct engagement with the research interests of Natural & Social Science academic staff, reaching beyond the taught curriculum and providing flexibility in study opportunities at Level III.
Indicative Syllabus The topics and assessment parameters of Subject Electives will be prescribed, but may vary annually reflecting the dynamic nature of staff research. Learning will be campus and/or field-based; field studies will accompany either trips within the taught curriculum of Natural & Social Science courses or staff research fieldwork. Having chosen from a published list of topics, each student group will be introduced to their elected study by the relevant academic. However, aside from minor seminar support, learning within the elective will be student-led.
Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and understanding
On successful completion of this module the student should have:
a)  an understanding of the vital contribution made by research to the development of knowledge in their elective, particularly the influence of recent research;
b)  a critical and reflexive sense of the nature of their elective as dynamic, plural and contested;
c)  an in depth knowledge of their elective, extending that body of information where feasible.



ii. Skills
On successful completion of this module the student have:
a)  taken responsibility for their own learning;
b)  critically acquired, judged, evaluated and interpreted data, evidence and/or text;
c)  planned, designed and executed a rigorous enquiry.
