Brief Description

This module examines the short film with respect to its principal forms, contexts of production, and its main distribution and exhibition platforms.

Indicative Syllabus

Students will have the opportunity to critically investigate the short film in its different forms as live action narrative, documentary and animated short as well as understand its particular contexts of production, distribution, and exhibition. Specific short films will be studied with respect to the status within the short film canon. Consideration will be placed upon the context of short film production within the age of the internet, with respect to video sharing websites, such as YouTube, and short film festival sites, such as Independent Lens.

Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and Understanding
Students who have successfully completed the module should be able to:
a) comprehensively understand the different forms and genres of the short film
b) critically analyse short films with respect to their formal structures
c) conceptualise various short film forms in terms of their cultural content and production context
d) critically understand the impact of new distribution channels and exhibition platforms for short films



ii. Skills
Students who have successfully completed the module should be able to:
a) further develop their analytical and research skills
b) effectively analyse representation, form, and production and reception contexts of short films in relation to their meanings
c) communicate clearly in writing
d) demonstrate independent research abilities
e) apply proper referencing conventions to written assignments
f) demonstrate good team skills when working in a group
