Brief Description

This module examines the film development process through which film projects are budgeted and eventually go on to secure financing and distribution, as well as the main concepts and strategies used in film marketing.

Indicative Syllabus

This module provides students with an investigation of the pre-production phase in filmmaking and the marketing practices used in the film and media industries. Students will acquire an understanding of the producer’s role in: script development, acquisition of rights and licensing agreements, composing a screenwriter agreement, brokering deals with talent, budgeting and financing a production, incorporation, and negotiation of distribution deals. Students will learn how the industry applies market segmentation techniques to potential film audiences and the significance of consumer behaviour. Case studies of budgets and marketing campaigns of particular films will be cited to illustrate the theoretical issues concerned.

i. Knowledge and Understanding
Students who have successfully completed the module should be able to:
a) comprehensively understand the various aspects involved in the management of the pre-production phase
b) analyse a script and produce a detailed breakdown of production costs
c) comprehensively understand the legal aspects underpinning copyright, contracts and licensing agreements
d) critically analyse marketing strategies used within the film and media industriese) evaluate the suitability of a marketing campaign with respect to its target audience

Students who have successfully completed the module should be able to:
a) utilise Movie Magic Budgeting software in creating a budget
b) communicate clearly in writingc) demonstrate independent research abilities
d) apply proper referencing conventions to written assignments
e) demonstrate good team skills when working in a group
