Brief Description | For this module students research an approved film-related topic and prepare a dissertation of 8-10,000 words. There is also the option to develop a combined practical and theoretical project focusing on screenwriting and combining a 3,000 word screenplay with a 5-7,000 word written analysis. |
Indicative Syllabus | This double module allows the student to engage with a range of film theory introduced and explored at levels 4 and 5. Advisory sessions with an appropriate tutor will provide advice on topic choice, argument construction and development of research methodology. Students are expected to work independently to produce a well written and effectively structured study that shows clear evidence of critical reading and a theoretical approach to the topic. Students can select to do a combined practical and theoretical project. This option allows for a flexible but no less rigorous approach to combine the production of a screenplay with a discussion of underpinning theory. |
Learning Outcomes | Knowledge and Understanding At the end of this double module students should be able to demonstrate that they: a) can extend a coherent body of knowledge in an area of film study b) critically evaluate the theoretical approaches appropriate to the subject and formulate coherent arguments that are underpinned by apposite textual examples c) can develop a clear and effective structure to their subject d) can manage their time effectively in determining and achieving their individual outcomes Skills At the end of this double module students should be able to: a) evaluate, critique and synthesise theoretical concepts and perspectives effectively and persuasively b) show evidence of independent research and illustrate understanding of the material c) demonstrate clarity and fluency of expression and a logical and coherent structure in their writing |
