Brief Description | This module examines postmodern and queer theories as analytical tools for the study of film. |
Indicative Syllabus | Tracing the impact of postmodernism on contemporary understandings of ‘identity’, and its distinctly revisionist approach to the conventions of film genre, narrative construction and semiotics, this module addresses the political, aesthetic and theoretical choices and positions offered by a range of films that have been defined as either postmodern, queer or both. Via select case studies, a number of key concepts will be explored, including debates around pleasure and spectatorship, ideas of transgression, inter-textuality, play and pastiche. In particular, more contemporary theories of 'fluidity' and 'performativity' will be employed as a means to deconstruct conventional tropes of gender, sexual identity, and their cinematic representations. |
Learning Outcomes | i. Knowledge and Understanding By the end of the module, students should: a) be able to critically evaluate the ways in which identities are aesthetically, politically and culturally constructed in film representation and how 'we' produce our identities in relation to our 'reading/recognition' of films b) be able to review critically the changing theoretical debates about sex, gender and sexuality in the transition from modernism to postmodernism c) use a sophisticated level of textual analysis in order to formulate responses to the cultural, political and theoretical implications of moving from binary to multiple and overlapping constructions of identity d) confidently evaluate the relationship between postmodernity and queer theory ii.
