Brief Description | This module looks at the relationship between mainstream and independent film production in North America. |
Indicative Syllabus | By focusing on the films of a number of key independent directors such as John Cassavetes, Spike Lee, Lisa Cholodenko, Richard Linklater and Gregg Araki, aspects such as filmic address and style will be explored to determine how these works use and subvert conventional narrative and generic strategies. This approach will be complimented by a broad critical overview of contemporary American conditions of production, distribution and exhibition in order to reconsider the shifting definition of “independent” filmmaking in the twenty-first century. |
Learning Outcomes | i. Knowledge and Understanding By the end of the module, students should be able to: a) offer a critical evaluation of concepts of mainstream and independent/marginal cinemas b) critically analyse and contextualise stylistic and thematic filmmaking choices within contemporary social, cultural and institutional modes of American film production c) consolidate and extend the textual and theoretical notions of authorship, genre and institutional factors generated at earlier levels of study
