Brief Description | This module explores textual analysis and feminist film theory to investigate issues of stereotyping, power, sexuality, gender and 'feminine' identity in Hollywood and Independent cinema. |
Indicative Syllabus | The module examines the representation of women in both mainstream (Hollywood) film and marginal (independent/low budget/experimental/art) cinemas. Using some of the major feminist interventions in film theory (such as ideas of the male gaze), underpinned by textual analysis, students will learn to investigate representations of gender, sexuality, post-modern identities and narrative agency. |
Learning Outcomes | i. Knowledge and Understanding By the end of the module students should be able to: a) view film forms critically b) understand of the ways in which the Hollywood and Independent cinemas have represented women on film c) understand major feminist interventions in film theory with regard to gaze, power, sexuality and representation.
