Brief Description This module will introduce to students the professional practices associated with the creative industries, specifically, working in the Arts, and/or Design and Media industries and require students to research, secure and undertake a period of work experience or industrial placement in a business or organization appropriate to the student’s field of study. The module allows students to update their PDP files in the light of experience gained and skills acquired in the undertaking of the workshops and placements, which form elements of the module content.
Indicative Syllabus

Topics covered will include researching and the preparation for a placement period within an organization or business related to the creative industries appropriate to the student’s area of study. The module will also begin to prepare students for employment or further study after graduation through a series of lead lectures, lectures or master classes by visiting practitioners
and business professionals and a number of practical workshops covering a range of transferable skills appropriate to self promotion, employability and further study.

Areas of inquiry covered will include: seeking employment and the development of CVs and letters of application, portfolio management, self and business promotion, networking, an introduction to setting up a business and freelance practice, collating and archiving research and contextual material, protecting your work, fundraising and where to seek support and advice for
business and research work, an introduction to business structures, roles and relationships appropriate to the creative industries.

Students will undertake a
period of placement work in an organisation or with an individual appropriate to their discipline area — the placement could include working alongside a freelance designer, illustrator or photographer, working within the voluntary sector, with arts organizations, schools, galleries, hospitals, media organisations, publishers, advertising agencies etc. etc.

Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and Understanding
By the end of the module, students hsould be able to demonstrate that they:
a) have a sound knowledge and understanding of thier personal attributes, skills and abilities as they relate to progression to employment or futher study
b) have an understanding of employment opportunities within the various branches of thea creative industries and within voluntary organisations and the business structures, practices and roles as appropriate to the students' discipline
c) appreciate the need for effective self and business promotion and are conversant with effective methods and techniques of marketing and promotion
d) have an understanding of the need to collect, collate and archive material relating to their practice.

i) Skills
By the end of the module, students should be able to demonstrate
competence in:
a) the observation and recording of working practices and organisational structures to provide a resource for future career planning
b) communication with individuals and groups within the structures of arts, design and media organisations and IT skills appropriate to employment enhancement
c) the planning, design and structuring of self-promotional material including the continuing development of their CV and skills portfolio
d) the structuring of an archive of ancillary material relating to Fine Art practice.



Learning and Teaching Activities Staff/Student contact time: approximately 20%
Student private study: approximately 80%
The module will be delivered through a combination of lectures, visiting speakers (art, design and media practitioners and business professionals), pracatical workships, supplemented by students' own research and placement time.

Staff/student contact may vary from the norm in modules with larger or smaller student numbers
