Brief Description Areas of particular personal interest within the disciplines of painting and drawing activity are identified and pursued. Students are encouraged to challenge and re-evaluate the content, visual language and appropriate processes achieved to date in their individual studio work.
Indicative Syllabus Students propose a programme of study to the module tutor(s). Students begin to develop a sustained and coherent working method, theme and language. Students participate in studio-based seminars, forums, group and individual tutorials and study visits. Students are encouraged to demonstrate self-motivation and a commitment to the development of their own practice, and to be adventurous in outlook. Sound technical practice and focused critical and contextual dialogue are emphasised.
Learning Outcomes i. Knowledge and Understanding
At the end of the module students will be expected to have knowledge and understanding of:
a) the context within which their practice can be located
b) the content and core issues which define their individual work and the criteria which form the basis of further investigation
c) appropriate avenues of practical and theoretical investigation pertinent to their work
d) the importance of self-motivation and the development of a sustained studio practice
e) the synthesis of form and content in their work
f) information gathering


ii. Skills
At the end of the module students will be expected to have skills in:
a) visual research
b) the articulation of critical and contextual issues, historical and contemporary, surrounding their work
c) development and use of materials/methods as appropriate
d) the critical evaluation of their own work and that of others
e) effective self-management within the parameters established by the course
f) experimentation and testing of ideas in relation to form
g) safe and responsible working practices.
