Brief Description | This module examines and develops the concept of language in society. The aim is to develop the student’s knowledge of the various approaches to the study of sociolinguistics to the point where they are able to conduct their own fieldwork and analysis of spoken language with confidence, and are able to comprehensively understand the relationships between the various social aspects and language use. Any of EZ104, EZ106 and EZ200 will be useful background to this module. |
Indicative Syllabus | This third-level module provides students with a comprehensive overview of the various theoretical and practical approaches to understanding the interaction between society and language. Topics such as sociolinguistic theory, regional and social dialectology, variation and change, code switching, interactional sociolinguistics, gender, language contact, language and power, quantitative and qualitative methods and ethnography of speaking are covered. |
Learning Outcomes | i. Knowledge and Understanding By the end of the module students should be able to demonstrate that they: a) have a comprehensive understanding of the sociolinguistic factors operating in society b) have a comprehensive knowledge of the different approaches to sociolinguistics c) have a deeper level of understanding of the interaction between society and language d) have a good knowledge of the various theoretical and methodological issues in Sociolinguistics in detail ii. Skills On completion of the module students should be able to demonstrate that they: a) can show clear evidence of independent research b) can use correctly in their writing the key terms and concepts associated with the sociolinguistic study of English c) are able to discuss, both orally and in writing, the interaction between the various social factors influencing language. |
