Brief Description This module develops students' knowledge and understanding of regional dialects within Britain and attitudes towards regional dialect speakers.
Indicative Syllabus

This is a module about language diversity and heritage which focuses on the variety of English language-use in different regions in Britain. The module is structured around a series of case studies which further examine in specific contexts the general features of forms of English that have arisen within the UK. Students will engage in active learning to produce their own original research into regional dialects.

Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and Understanding
By the end of the module students should be able to demonstrate that they:
a) are highly aware of different types of dialects in Britain
b) understand and can critically evaluate attitudes to dialect speakers
c) understand the relationship between place, dialect and identity.



ii. Skills
On completion of the module students should be able to demonstrate that they can:
a) articulate a good understanding of language diversity within British English
b) describe, in a sophisticated manner, the characteristics of a range of regional British dialects
