Brief Description | This module develops students’ understanding of language-focussed study generated by staff interests and research. |
Indicative Syllabus | In this module, staff teach on special topics such as: figurative language, language and race, language comparison, language acquisition, cognitive linguistics, multi-modal analysis, language death and fieldwork methodology. Such options in reflecting staff research interests enable students to gain knowledge both of research methods and processes as well as to participate in relevant debates and contribute to discussion on the changing nature of language and academic study. |
Learning Outcomes | i. Knowledge and Understanding By the end of the module students should be able to demonstrate that they: a) are familiar with a range of academic debates relevant to the topic. b) can take and explain a considered position in relation to the particular specialism studied ii. Skills On completion of the module, students should be able to demonstrate that they can study a topic in depth using analytic and discursive skills, especially those of critical evaluation, rigorous argument and synthesis. |
