Brief Description | This module develops the analytical language skills already acquired in the course. |
Indicative Syllabus | This third-level module provides students with a comprehensive analysis of the structure of language at the levels of the sound system, word-building system, phrase structure and word meaning. The module covers transcriptions of spoken language, as well as examples of written language. |
Learning Outcomes | i. Knowledge and Understanding By the end of the module students should be able to demonstrate that they: a) have a good critical understanding of the linguistic structure of English b) understand the distinctions between the different levels of structure in English c) understand the interaction between these different levels of structure ii. Skills On completion of the module students should be able to demonstrate that they: a) can show some evidence of independent research b) can use correctly in their writing the key terms and concepts associated with the structural study of English c) can conduct, both orally and in writing, a thorough analysis of spoken and written language, and to understand the interaction between the various linguistic components that make up a language. |
