Brief Description This module offers a basic account, supported by designated course-books, of the history of the English language from Old English to examples of English in the contemporary world.
Indicative Syllabus

This second-level module provides students with a chronological grounding in the main historical phases of the development of English. Periods covered include those of Old English, the influence of the Norse invaders, the Norman Conquest, Middle English, Early Modern English, the scientific age, current changes and the future of English.

Learning Outcomes i. Knowledge and Understanding
By the end of the module students should be able to demonstrate that they:
a) have a good knowledge of the history and structure of English
b) have a good understanding of the specific changes in the English language over the different historical periods
c) have a good sense of the diversification of English as it becomes a world language in the 19th and 20th Centuries

ii. Skills
On completion of the module students should be able to demonstrate that they:
a) can distinguish and describe the main periods in the history of English
b) are able to use the key terms associated with the historical study of English, and to apply them in written and oral work.
