Brief Description | This module introduces students to the language of the various online forums dealing with global issues such as resource depletion, over-population, climate change and financial insecurity. |
Indicative Syllabus | This is a second-level module covering the ways in which language is structured and used by members of online forums, blogs and social networking sites which discuss publicly the problems facing humanity in the 21st century. Such discussions may include oil, gas and coal depletion, water insecurity, political and social breakdown, climate change, rising sea levels and possible plans and solutions to the problems. Students also explore the ways in which language is used, along with for example the avatars of the members, to portray or hide identities. The overall aim is to develop skills in using new media to effectively engage in debates on issues of importance for the 21st century. |
Learning Outcomes | i. Knowledge and Understanding By the end of the module, students should be able to demonstrate that they: a)understand that language use in the new media can be different in specific ways from standard written language b) understand that relationships, identities and hierarchies found in the real world can also be found developing in online forums c) understand that the problems facing humanity are leading people to begin to think laterally, and to question conventional wisdom on such topics as population, energy, water, and financial insecurityd) understand the various identities and hierarchies found developing in online forums that discuss the topics listed above ii. Skills On completion of the module students should be able to demonstrate that they: a) can identify the various language features found in online forums b) can describe the various identities and hierarchies found developing in online forums that discuss the topics listed above c) can demonstrate a developing literacy in analysing new media d) can demonstrate an emerging literacy in analysing and contributing to online forums e) can use language skilfully to debate the topics, and to persuade others, while also accepting other points of view |
