Brief Description | This module explores a range of views of language as both discriminatory and liberative and shows how women and men use language strategically in the pursuit of identity and power. The module reviews recent sociolinguistic research into the different linguistic practices of women and men and considers how the relationships between gender difference and language can be construed. |
Indicative Syllabus | In this module the possibility of a distinctively male or female use of language in literature is discussed and aspects of sociolinguistics are introduced. Students will be exposed to a range of debates about gender and language - such as the debate over the role of language in sexual discrimination - and to theories of gender-specific languages. |
