Brief Description

The module aims to give students a firm understanding of children growing up and developing in a diverse multicultural, multi-faith and multi-lingual society. The module will extend Level I work on equal opportunities and social inclusion.

Indicative Syllabus

The module will cover the following topics:

  • living in a diverse society;
  • structures of discrimination such as 'race', class, gender, disability, culture and religion as they relate to children's care, education and wellbeing.
  • early intervention as a process in promoting an inclusive society;
  • notions of equality, inclusion and anti-discriminatory practice as well as the knowledge, skills and resources to support children in their cultural identity and promote positive attitudes to cultural diversity within their setting;
  • professional approaches to special educational needs, including the Code of Practice;
  • issues underpinning inclusion, both social and educational;
  • child poverty

 

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Articulate concepts of diversity and anti-discriminatory practice;
  2. Evaluate and discuss the impact of diversity on the practice offered within the setting;
  3. Demonstrate an awareness of the concept of inclusion in its broadest terms;
  4. Examine professional approaches to special needs in early childhood;
  5. Communicate and promote positive attitudes to cultural diversity and supporting young children and their families;
  6. Demonstrate a thorough understanding of the physical, emotional, social, intellectual and behavioural needs of young children in a diverse society.
