Brief Description

The module aims to extend students’ understanding about holistic child development and care through an examination of young children's health and wellbeing.

Indicative Syllabus

The module will cover the following topics:

  • the notion of children's wellbeing in relation to the Every Child Matters, EYFS frameworks, recent government and European health initiatives and theoretical perspectives;
  • the concept of health, health promotion, nutrition, promoting a healthy environment and childhood illness.;
  • he importance of listening to children's voices as an integral aspect of supporting children's mental and emotional wellbeing;
  • reflection upon and analysis of the strategies that students use within their setting to communicate and promote the wellbeing of parents and carers.
Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Examine how current legislation and guidance underpin the concept of children's wellbeing;
  2. Identify and analyse the factors that promote health in young children;
  3. Apply key theoretical frameworks in health to their practice;
  4. Analyse current legislation and its relation to health care provision;
  5. Engage in and evaluate mechanisms used in relation to health promotion;
  6. Evaluate the importance of listening to children in supporting wellbeing.
