Brief Description |
The module aimsto examine the notion of the family and family structures in relation to social care in the community. |
Indicative Syllabus |
This module will cover the following topics:
- children as active learners within their own family;
- the impact of changes in societal expectation of 'the family' on children;
- ways to support and empower individual children and family needs;
- the role of context and family structures upon the development of the child and family in the 21 century;
- social care support structures for families and children in a range of contexts;
- the importance of relationships in families that are considered to be marginalized within communities and in society, such as refugee families, gypsy / traveller families, families separated by imprisonment, families deemed to be at risk due to low financial resources, stress, divorce and child protection issues;
- approaches to working in partnership with families and communities;
- the promotion of equal opportunities for children and families through the development of anti-oppressive, inclusive practice;
- the role of community and family support groups.

Learning Outcomes |
A student passing this module should be able to:
- Articulate the differing concepts of the family and family structures within a historical perspective;
- Identify and examine the influence of historical, cultural and social context upon family responsibility within society;
- Identify and explain family and community support structures that are available to empower families and communities;
- Employ differing methods of working effectively in partnership with families and communities;
- Investigate issues relating to families and equal opportunities;
- Identify and evaluate the influence of personal value and belief systems within family structures and their function.
