Brief Description

This module aims to set the position of early childhood within the context of recent government policy initiatives and the history of early childhood care and education in this country. It introduces and explores general issues relating to the field of study.

Indicative Syllabus

This module will cover the following topics:

  • all aspects of early childhood health, social care and education within the context of UK provision;
  • the evolution of the Early Years Foundation Stage and Every Child Matters agenda from a historical perspective;
  • the different ideologies, past and present that have influenced policy and practice;
  • reflection upon own practice in relation to their study.
Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Identify the issues relating to the study of early childhood;
  2. Explain the impact of differing ideologies of child development on care, health and education;
  3. Compare the different ideologies that have influenced practice in early years;
  4. Apply and evaluate the different ideologies to their own practice within their setting;
  5. Identify the influence of social, historical and cultural context upon early years;
  6. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of how current legislation and policy impacts upon early childhood studies.
