Brief Description

The module aimsto provide students with the opportunity to reflect upon the role of literature and play in effectively supporting language development in young children.

Indicative Syllabus

This module will cover the following topics:

  • strategies for supporting children with English as an Additional Language;
  • the evaluation of different types of literature and play based experiences;
  • how to use, and reflect upon, day to day experiences within the workplace with children to support speaking, listening, reading and mark making;
  • the role of parents and carers in promoting language and literacy;.
  • ways to apply understanding of typical language development in young children to the analysis of a range of learning and teaching strategies.
Learning Outcomes

 A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of language acquisition and development theory;
  2. Explain the importance of early interactions with babies and young children;
  3. Identify and evaluate different approaches to literacy development within their practice;
  4. Appreciate the impact of narrative and story on young children's social, emotional and intellectual development through the sharing of books, stories, and language games;
  5. Provide a stimulating environment to support babies and young children's language development through an examination of their current setting;
  6. Support parents and carers in promoting young children's language development.
