Brief Description |
The module aimsto complement EYF162 Child Development (0-8). It will provide students with the necessary underpinning knowledge, techniques, skills and workshop experiences to enable them to reflect upon their practice in undertaking observations, monitoring, assessing, planning and reporting on identified aspects of young children's wellbeing, growth and development. |
Indicative Syllabus |
This module will cover the following topics:
- the knowledge, values, techniques, skills and strategies involved in studying young children;
- a range of observation, planning, monitoring, assessment, reporting and recording requirements in different contexts and legislative frameworks; methods of eliciting the child's voice;
- ethical, professional and cultural issues involved in studying children;
- odd practice, and the importance of collaborating effectively with colleagues and parents in studying children;
- the impact of equal opportunity issues and social and cultural differences on the study of young children;
- development of student's practice.

Learning Outcomes |
A student passing this module should be able to:
- Value, select, utilise and justify different techniques and strategies for observing, monitoring, assessing, planning and recording children's wellbeing, growth and development within the workplace;
- Evaluate and respond to some of the ethical and cultural issues involved in studying children in their workplace and within different context;
- Identify the importance of studying children in partnership with parents and other carers;
- Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of the child’s voice in the observation and assessment process;
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of effective practice in accordance with current legislation related to the observation, planning and assessment process;
- Recognise how the observation, planning and assessment process supports children’s lifelong learning and sustainable futures.
