Brief Description

The module aims: to develop a secure knowledge and understanding of children's development between the ages of 0 and 8 years. Students will become familiar with the main theories on the development of young children covering all aspects: social, emotional, intellectual, linguistic and physical.

Indicative Syllabus

This module will cover the following topics:

  • the social, emotional, linguistic, intellectual, and physical elements of early childhood development;
  • an holistic view of child development;
  • how knowledge of child development underpins their work as a Senior Practitioner;
  • the nature/nurture debate including topics such as parenting styles and attachment theory;
  • the role and value of play theory as central to child development;
  • how theoretical constructs relate to the provision of a stimulating learning environment.
Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Explain the social, emotional, intellectual, linguistic and physical development of children between 0-8 years;
  2. Recognise significant aspects of theory relating to child development and relate this knowledge to the study of children within their setting;
  3. Show awareness of atypical development in children;
  4. Evaluate the role of play and its contribution to children's development;
  5. Provide a healthy and stimulating environment conducive to development;
  6. Show awareness of equal opportunities in relation to the developing child.
