Brief Description

The module aims: to emphasize the concept of academic self-improvement focusing upon the used of feedback for personal target setting. Students will be introduced to, develop and encourage the acquisition of those study and transferable skills required of students for the successful completion of their undergraduate programme.

Indicative Syllabus

This module will cover the following topics:

  • understanding of, and use of, information literacy;
  • audit of existing skills, developed through their work and life experiences;
  • skills required for the successful completion of the undergraduate programme;
  • use of feedback of varying types for reaching full potential as independent learners;
  • methods to plan for, and reflect upon, the ongoing development of skills; analysis of learning styles;
  • note taking;
  • literature searching;
  • academic writing;
  • oral presentation;
  • ICT skills including Moodle;
  • assignment preparation;
  • time management;
  • the development of a Personal Development Planning (PDP).
Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Identify the fundamental relationship between study skills and personal transferable skills;
  2. Explain the importance of being a reflective learner in order to identify personal learning strengths and areas for personal target setting;
  3. Show an appreciation of the relationship between lifelong skill development and employability;
  4.  Recognise the need to develop skills in an integrated and holistic manner;
  5. Set personal goals and evaluate progress towards their achievement;
  6. Use feedback fully and effectively for self-improvement.
