Brief Description | This module explores developments in drama since 1900. EX240 Stages of Drama 2: Restoration to Realism is recommended but not required. |
Indicative Syllabus | In the first semester students will study British drama of the years 1900 to 1950 and cognate European and non-European texts, focussing on their ideological trajectory, social and political contexts and influence. In the second semester students will study similar issues in relation to the drama of the years from 1950 to the present. Focussing on the idea of drama as a representation of social conflict, texts are chosen with a view to illustrating continuities and innovations in the theatre from the early twentieth century to the present, with due regard for staging and theatrical effect. |
