Brief Description This module explores developments in drama since 1900.

EX240 Stages of Drama 2: Restoration to Realism is recommended but not required.

Indicative Syllabus In the first semester students will study British drama of the years 1900 to 1950 and cognate European and non-European texts, focussing on their ideological trajectory, social and political contexts and influence. In the second semester students will study similar issues in relation to the drama of the years from 1950 to the present. Focussing on the idea of drama as a representation of social conflict, texts are chosen with a view to illustrating continuities and innovations in the theatre from the early twentieth century to the present, with due regard for staging and theatrical effect.
Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and understanding
By the end of the module, students should be able:
a) to read and analyse a number of key texts from the contemporary period of drama, to have an advanced understanding of the continuities and innovations in theatre within that period, and to further deepen their understanding of drama as a specific literary genre since 1900;
b) to have a nuanced and advanced understanding of the challenges and issues facing playwrights from the contemporary period;
c) to further enhance and widen a critical vocabulary appropriate to the advanced and sophisticated study of drama at level 6. 
d) to further develop their own tastes and interests within Drama



ii. Skills
Students will have developed advanced, confident, fluent writing skills, advanced research skills, confident and articulate oral presentation skills, as well as practice in independent learning.
