Brief Description

The dissertation is a piece of work independently conceived and produced by the student, with a maximum length of 10,000 words. The dissertation is weighted as a double module, and is therefore reckoned to involve around 300 hours of work. Students thus have the chance to study a topic of their own choice over the whole of the academic year.

Indicative Syllabus Each student may expect up to seven and a half hours of supervision throughout the whole course of the dissertation. The nature of the supervision varies widely according to the kind of project undertaken and the student's habits of work, but most supervisors will expect to see students regularly and see evidence of their progress. Students will be expected to submit parts of the dissertation in draft for the supervisor's comments, since such feedback often give the best basis for subsequent discussion. Although supervisors will often give advice on reading, the responsibility for drawing up a bibliography rests with the student.
Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and Understanding Students who complete this module successfully should have learned the following:

(i) To work independently on an approved research project of their choice
(ii) To undertake structured independent research using primary and secondary sources
(iii) To extend and deepen their understanding of a particular area or subject in the study of English literature

ii. Skills

Students who complete the module successfully should have achieved these skills:

(i) To formulate research questions
(ii) To articulate critical concepts and methods appropriate to level 6 of their degree programmes
(iii) To handle a complex, extended argument or arguments in a rigorous manner

(iv) To write a sustained piece of analytic, critically-informed and intellectually consistent prose

(v) To plan, organise, draft and rewrite an extended piece of work

Learning and Teaching Activities A series of lectures introduce students to dissertation study and guide them in matters of research, presentation, and resources. Teaching is mostly through close supervision in tutorials.
