Brief Description This module will allow students to examine a range of influential nineteenth and early twentieth century texts of various genres written in English. The course's main focus on the workings of imaginative writing will be supplemented by an exploration of the larger historical situation and cultural issues which emerge from these texts and from other writings in and of the period.
Indicative Syllabus This double module is part of the important historical thread which runs through levels 5 and 6, and so follows on from the core period study modules in level 5, EX213 and EX214 and complements the work on EX316 From Modernism to the Present.
Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and Understanding
At the end of the module students should have:
a) engaged with a representative range of nineteenth century writings of fictional, non-fictional, and poetic kinds, and with broader social and political, as well as aesthetic questions arising from the texts.
b) developed and articulated their sense both of the diversity of literary achievement in the period, as well, contrastingly, as of recurrent or changing general historical features evident in the content of the texts and their forms of expression.

ii. Skills
Students will work further at their analytical and argumentative skills of close reading and critical discussion. The course will also encourage and assess independent study skills: in particular, students will work actively, supported by tutorial work, to construct their own comparative assignments, incorporating literary or critical texts from the period that are not directly taught. The course will stimulate students to work from texts towards reflection on theoretical and historical issues. In this way the text will be a useful and pleasurable accompaniment to other year three modules.
