Brief Description This module introduces students to the theatre and drama of the period from the Restoration to the late nineteenth century.
Indicative Syllabus In the first semester students will study the drama of the English Restoration and the eighteenth century, and cognate European texts, focussing on their ideological trajectory, social and political contexts and influence. In the second semester students will study similar issues in relation to the drama of the nineteenth century. Focussing on the idea of drama as a representation of social conflict, texts are chosen with a view to illustrating continuities and innovations in Western theatre from the Restoration period to the nineteenth century, with due regard for staging and theatrical effect.
