Brief Description | The module introduces students to, and allows selective study of, a variety of writings in the period 1700-1830, including verse, fictional and non-fictional prose, letters and diaries. While its historical parameters lend the module intellectual coherence, the emphasis will be on the discovery of literary variety, and the development of readings capable of discriminating and comparing writings produced in different contexts and obeying different aesthetics. |

Learning Outcomes | i. Knowledge and Understanding By the end of the module, students should have gained: a) a broad experience of reading 18th-century and Romantic writing; b) a sense of major literary developments within the period in relation to their social and aesthetic contexts; c) skills of analysis which are sensitive to the theoretical and critical issues emerging from the literature of the period.
